Romeo & Juliet: Analyzing Staging in Act 2 - Beginning of Balcony Scene

St Valentine 2014 (4 ESO)
One of the most famous lovers of all time are Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare wrote about them centuries ago, but their love story is eternal.
The many different adaptations that has been made of this play prove it.
In the video below, you can watch some of them. All of them show the beginning of the Balcony Scene (Act 2 Scene 2), also perhaps the most famous one from the play.

I hope you LOVE it!

Deny thy ________1 and refuse thy name;
Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I'll no longer be a Capulet.

Retain that dear perfection which he owes (c)
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, (d)
And for that name, which is no part of thee,
Take all myself.

Romeo.
I take thee at thy word.
Call me but love, and I'll be new baptis'd;
Henceforth I never will be Romeo.
Juliet.
What man art thou that, thus bescreened in night,
So stumblest on my councel? (e)
Romeo.
By a name
I know not how to tell thee who I am:
My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself,
Because it is an enemy to thee.
Had I it _______7, I would tear the _______8.
why (a)
But only your name is my enemy; you would be yourself even if you had some other name. (b)

HALLOWEEN!!!! 4 ESO

We've watched in class the scary film "The Tell Tale Heart" adapted from Edgar Allan Poe's short story of the same title.
This is the video and, also, some of the activities we have done.
 You can also find here other other animated adaptations of it and a link to the whole text, just in case you would like to read it. Give it a try! It's not long and very scary....

Activities -->

What do you expect to find in a horror story?

Watch the adaptation from Poe's tale and order the sentences as they appear in the film.
_____ True, I'm nervous , very very dreadfully nervous, but why would you say that I am mad?
_____ Yes, yes, I did it.
_____ He had never harmed me.
_____ A scream, my own gentlemen, a childish dream. But, come in, please.
_____ I think, I think it was his eye.
_____ Nothing out of place here.
_____ For an hour I didn't move a muscle.
_____ Of course I had to get rid of the eye.
_____ But there were still work to be done.
_____ Still I waited while time slowed, stopped, end out.

Write a sentence with each word relating it to the story.
Example: old man The narrator lived with an old man.

gold                                                           eye                                           seven days

the beating of the heart.                       a scream                                  the police

floor                                                         jail                                            mad

Poe was a symbolist writer. What do you think the beating of the heart stands for?

Voluntary work: Write a short horror story (about 100 -150 lines)
Write a summary of “The Tell Tale Heart” (about 100 -150 lines)

Other adaptations of "The Tell Tale Heart"

And now you can have FUN watching poor Edgar Allan Poe's auditions for his own TV show. Humiliating!
